It’s been a mixed feelings for the Nigerian contingents this weekend on the continent as Enyimba secured victory to advance into the group stages while Rivers United lost away from home and also missed out on a group stage spot on away goals rule.
Goals from Sadiq Abubakar and Victor Mbaoma secured a 2-0 victory for the People’s Elephant at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.
The Finidi George led side are through to the group stages, unbeaten in 3 games so far and have scored 6 goals.
Meanwhile, same isn’t the story for fellow Nigerian side Rivers United who have bowed out of the competition on away goals rule.
The Stanley Eguma led side lost 1-0 away to Al Masry. Even though they won the reverse fixture 2-1 in Nigeria, a 2-2 aggregate scoreline means Al Masry advance on away goals rule.
Enyimba are now the only Nigerian team left on the continent and will look to move further than a last season’s quarter final exit.
