Victor Osimhen will not compete in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be held in Cameroon in January 2022.
The 22-year-old Napoli attacker tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time this year on Thursday, according to reports.
There have also been arguments between Napoli and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) concerning Osimhen’s match fitness after he was recently named to Augustine Eguavoen’s AFCON roster of 28 players.
In addition, the former Wolfsburg youth is currently recovering from a facial injury incurred during a match in the Italian league.
However, a source close to the player told TheCable that Osimhen has informed Eguavoen that he will be dropped from the team that will travel to Cameroon for the biennial competition so that he can “completely recuperate from the injury.”
According to another source, Osimhen dropped out of the event to maintain peace between his club and the NFF.
Osimhen was a member of Egypt’s 2019 bronze-winning AFCON team.
Henry Onyekuru, an Olympiacos forward, has been called up to replace the Nigerian talisman.
Henry was a member of the 2019 bronze-winning team.
