Newly appointed head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Jose Peseiro has told the president of the Nigeria Football Federation that the country’s senior mens national team could have played in the finals of the Russia 2018 World Cup.
This came to light when NFF president Amaju Pinnick revealed the conversation he had in private with the Portuguese tactician.
Pinnick began by saying the fomer Venezuela coach converser with him as if he had ”been coaching the Super Eagles for a long time.”
“If you look at Peseiro, when I was talking to him, he was talking as if he has been coaching the Super Eagles for a long time.” Pinnick began.
The former assistant to Jose Mourinho in 2003 mentioned Eagles’ performance in the 2018 World Cup saying the Croatian team did not “overdominate” the Eagles and he said the then Gernot Rhor led side could have faced France in the finals instead of Croatia who went on to lose 4-2 to ‘Les Bleus’
“He said to me, ‘listen, Nigeria, you played against Croatia (at 2018 World Cup) in your World Cup opening match, they did not over dominate you. It was 45%/55% ball possession. And he said ‘Croatia eventually played in the final of the World Cup, it could have been Nigeria.” Pinnick continued.
Pinnick further described his amazement when the newly appointed coach analysed every member of the Super Eagles squad scientifically saying he was “taken aback”:
“I got impressed. he brought the wyscout, a software to analyse the strength of our players. He gave me the analyses of everyone of our players scientifically. I was taking aback. When he spoke with the technical group, I was just an observer, we are all impressed.”
However, a new coach analyzing a previous coach’s performance in the Nigerian national team setup is not strange as Lars Lagerback also did something similar while analyzing Chief Adegboye Onigbinde’s performance at the 2002 World Cup co-hosted by Korea and Japan prior to South Africa 2010 World Cup. The Eagles exited the Mundial under Lagerback in 2010 and the Swede never returned to Nigeria.
Jose Peseiro has just been appointed as Super Eagles’ new head coach but he will begin his duties after Afcon’21.
