Both games of Group A in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon ended in a 1-1 draw with all sides except Ethiopia beaming with smiles.
Hosts Cameroon were held by Cape Verde to a 1-1 draw and the tournament topscorer Vincent Aboubakar drilled home his country-high fifth goal of the competition.
The Indomitable Lions broke the deadlock through Captain Aboubakar after 39 minutes but they saw their lead cancelled out eight minutes into the second period through substitute Gary Rodrigues.
Vincent Aboubakar has scored five goals in Afcon’21 and is tied with former striker and current Fecafoot President Samuel Eto’o who scored Five goals in two different Afcon editions.
Cameroon who are unbeaten in their capital could have gotten a match winner but Vincent Aboubakar skied his effort.
Cameroon broke the dealock after Moumi Ngamaleu’s free-kick was headed away by Cape Verde’s Diney Borges. Aboubakar found the bottom corner with a firm left-footed strike having latched onto the loose ball.
Cape Verde kept on fighting and were rewarded in the 53rd minute by Rodrigues who came from the bench. The substitute flicked home with his heel after a squared ball from Montero.
In the other group game, Burkinafaso also settled for a 1-1 draw with Ethiopia.
Bayala’s 24th minute opener was wiped out by Kebede in the 52nd minute. Both sides didn’t get on the good side of the VAR as they both had a penalty call declined.
Cameroon who have qualified since Game 2 will be in action on Monday January 24 against a third-placed side.
Burkinafaso have also qualified for the knockouts having placed second with four points but are ahead of Cape Verde who finished third also with four points but are third by virtue of head-to-head. They will also have to wait until other sides play their games to see if they will be among the four best losers in order to advance.
However, Ethiopia who were the first nation to arrive Cameroon have now become the first nation to be sent packing after ending the tournament with just a point.
