Les Merlus have now recruited another Nigerian international to their ranks, in addition to the 21-year-old former Kortrijk forward currently on their books.
The Super Eagles midfielder Innocent Bonke has become the second Nigerian to play for Lorient, joining Terem Moffi, after agreeing to a three-year contract with the French Ligue 1 club.
The Super Eagles player was signed on a free transfer after he was released by Malmo at the start of the season, when his contract was about to expire.
The 25-year-old had been linked with a move to the Ligue 1 club earlier this week, and today, Lorient debuted Bonke in a stunning video posted to their Twitter account.
Bonke was one of Malmo’s most talented players, and he was instrumental in the team’s return to the Champions League group stage after a five-year hiatus from the competition. He also played a key role in the Swedish national team’s two straight Allsvenskan titles.
Although the Kaduna-born defensive midfielder was part in all of Malmo’s Champions League games this season, his efforts were in vain as the Swedish club failed to secure a victory.
Les Merlus will, however, be looking to prove their worth as they attempt to avoid relegation from Ligue 1 for the second season in a row.
