The President of La Ligue de L’Estudaire (Gabonese senior football league) Serge Mombo has been arrested after accusations of sexual abuse according to the Guardian.
Mr. Mombo was allegedly accused of sexually abusing young players as well as demanding sexual relation as a condition of securing them locations in nationwide groups.
Having served as a policeman and a referee in times past, Mombo served as the kit man for the men’s senior national team of Gabon at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
However, Mombo who was re-elected as the president of Gabonese league FA back in June 2021 had denied the claims and allegations made by the alleged victims team and witnesses when interviewed by the Guardian earlier this month.
But Mombo was arrested at the Léon Mba Airport on his arrival with the Gabon national team on Tuesday following Gabon’s exit from Afcon via penalties against Burkinafaso via penalties on Sunday evening and there is a well founded reason to believe that authorities in Gabon had him closely under their nose as they kept tabs on him during the tournament.
Mombo has also denied claims which link him to Gabonese football coach Patrick Assoumou Eyi who is also facing charges of raping minors and sexual assault. Eyi also denied the claims.
Serge Mombo had been accused of providing Eyi with boys to abuse sexually.
It should be recalled that FIFA back on 10th January confirmed that its independent ethics committee has opened an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse which is widespread in Gabonese football.
Serge Mombo will have his hands full if found guilty of these allegations levelled against him as the president of Gabon Ali Bongo has termed the sexual allegations wrapping around the country’s name as “a very serious matter” with the Gabonese government also declaring it will hold a judicial investigation into possible sexual abuse against children and young people in all sports in the country as reported by the Guardian.
Although Serge Mombo has further denied allegations for now saying his accusers are “lying to try to dirty” his image.
Also this week, two tennis coaches in Jean Vivon and Dandhy Poaty have been arrested on the suspicion of alleged sexual abuse on minors. Both are awaiting charges.
