Seasoned basketball administrator Mark Igoche has been elected as the new President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation [NBBF].

The election which should have taken place in December finally took place in the morning of January 31, 2022 at the MKO Abiola stadium, Abuja.

This election is expected by many to put to rest at least for a while the crisis and tussles going on in the basketball administration in the country.

Mark Igoche who was a former Basketball player will replace outgoing president Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida.

The venue of the election was scheduled for Abuja amid reports that it could take place in Edo State according to letter released by the NBBF through its Secretary General.

A portion of it states:

“The Executive Congress to hold in the National Stadium, Package ‘A’ in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory at the same venue where the 29 National Sports Federations in Nigeria held their Elective Congresses; towards ensuring the safety and security of the Delegates.”

A delighted Igoche took to his Twitter page to announce his victory saying:

“Nigerians have adopted the new face of Basketball and I am pleased that this new direction will open up the luxury of talents in the game to global audience.”

The former board member of the NBBF had earlier said that his passion for the development of basketball in Nigeria started years back when he could not fulfill his dream of playing basketball up to the international level.

It should be recalled that Igoche was one of the supporters of the Ahmadu Kida-led administration but in an interview with Punch, he said he quit the party as their plans were no longer in union.

“Before he came on board, and when we were moving together, our plan was grassroots basketball development. Our plan was to raise the standard of Nigerian basketball,

But when he (Ahmadu-Kida) got there, everything changed and I told him this wasn’t our plan because how won’t we, for a whole year, organise one proper league.”

Mark Igoche is the owner of Mark Mentors Basketball club in Nigeria and is also the founder of the Mark D’ball Championship which debuted in Otukpo, Benue State last year and is scheduled to go down at the Indoor Basketball Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
