West Ham United are allegedly interested in signing Rangers defender Calvin Bassey as David Moyes looks to bolster his defensive options.

The Hammers have showed interest in Calvin Bassey, according to a report from Football Insider. After impressing in the Scottish Professional Football League, the Rangers left-back has become a sought-after prospect in the Scottish market. He has been on David Moyes’ radar for some time, with the former Manchester United manager specifically eyeing him since 2020.

Moyes, though, is prepared to re-enter the market for Bassey in the summer following the 22-year-two old’s good years at Rangers.

The West Ham manager is reportedly interested in signing a left-footed defender amid concerns about the futures of several key players, notably Declan Rice. While Rice is a midfielder by trade, two Manchester giants are monitoring the important number six.

Along with Rice, West Ham will have to fight to retain Issa Diop. The Frenchman is apparently being courted by Paris Saint-Germain, emphasizing the importance of adding a new defender who can compete with the present first-team choices.

The 22-year-old might be an intriguing possibility, having been a huge success for Rangers since joining in the summer of 2020.

The former Leicester City defender made just seven SPFL appearances in his first season, he has established himself as an ever-present man in the Rangers backline this season, making 19 league outings.

While Bassey is a natural left-back, he is a flexible defender who is capable of playing as a centre-back. His strong left foot enables him to smoothly convert between left-back and left-sided centre-back roles, implying that the 22-year-old could fit into a back-three if necessary.

From a tactical standpoint, the Nigerian defender might show to be an effective replacement for not only Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma, but also for Arthur Masuaku and Aaron Cresswell. This makes him a viable alternative for David Moyes as he attempts to bolster the defense unit’s depth next season.

Although, the Rangers starlet is not West Ham’s only option next summer, when the club is poised to splash the cash on a new defender. William Saliba, an Arsenal loanee, is one of their more audacious targets, with David Moyes apparently considering a €30 million bid.
