According to information from Bild, which was repeated by Marca, Spartak Moscow’s last 16 Europa League encounter with Leipzig will be canceled today by UEFA owing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week.

Leipzig, who advanced to the last 16 after defeating Real Sociedad in the playoff, will now play in the competition’s quarter-finals.

The crisis in Ukraine is clearly having a horrific human toll, but it is also having an impact on sports.

Spartak was excused from last week’s playoffs since they finished first in their group, ahead of Napoli.

Zenit St. Petersburg, their compatriots, accomplished the same, only to be knocked out of the Europa League by Real Betis in their tie.

Along with city rivals Sevilla and Barcelona, Betis is one of three La Liga clubs still in the league.

In the last 16 ties, they will face Eintracht Frankfurt, West Ham United, and Galatasaray, respectively.

Victor Moses’ hope of lifting the Europa League for yhe second time has now been dented.
