Liverpool defender, Joel Matip has won the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for the month of February.

The center back played every minute of Liverpool’s four league games last month, Leicester, Burnley, Norwich and Leeds, keeping three clean sheets and conceding just once in a 3-1 victory over Norwich.

He provided an assist for Diogo Jota to kick off the Merseyside team month, with a 2-0 win over Leicester.

Matip was also instrumental in Liverpool’s other end of the field. He scored a memorable goal in Liverpool’s 6-0 demolition of Leeds at Anfield in their final game of the month of February.

Those performances have seen Matip take home the award ahead of fellow nominees, Che Adams of Southampton, Ryan Fraser of Newcastle, Harry Kane of Tottenham, Ben Mee of Burnley and Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace.

Matip becomes the third Liverpool player to win the prize this season, following Mohamed Salah in October and Trent Alexander-Arnold in November.

The German born defender is now the first Cameroonian to win the Premier League’s Player of the Month award, and also the first central defender to win the award since his teammate Virgil van Dijk in December 2018.

Partly thanks to the Cameroonian defender’s form, Liverpool have closed the gap to Premier League leaders to six points, with Jurgen Klopp’s men also holding a game in hand against their fierce rivals.
