Villarreal head coach, Unai Emery says this year was a step backwards for his former employer’s, PSG.

The 50-year-old Spanish coach didn’t mince any words when asked about PSG’s performance in the Champions League this season.

“This year was a step backwards, but I told Nasser [Al-Khelaifi]: “You’ll win the Champions League. In time, you’ll win it.” Someone has to break the glass ceiling.

“PSG are on the right track because there’s a form of consistency in their results and that they keep looking to improve.

Emery who won the Europa League with Villarreal last season thinks PSG’s lack of reaction cost them the game against Real Madrid.

PSG were knocked out of the Champions League despite being 2-0 up on aggregate up until the last 30 minutes.

Karim Benzema scored a second-half hat-trick under 17 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu to catapult Real Madrid to the quarter final.

“When Benzema equalised and then scored the second goal, I looked at the players I know well like Kimpembe or Marquinhos – they didn’t know how to react because they were invaded by frustration.” He concluded.

Unai Emery’s men welcome the Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich later this evening. The yellow submarine will be hoping to qualify for the Semifinals of the Champions League, having already upset the odds by knocking out Juventus.
