Liverpool forward, Sadio Mane has surpassed former Chelsea forward, Didier Drogba to become the highest-scoring African player in the Champions League knockout stages.

Mane scored his 14th goal of the Champions League knockout stages against Villarreal last week at Anfield. A goal that saw him level Didier Drogba.

Liverpool were outplayed in the first half of the return leg on Tuesday at the Estadio de La Ceramica.

Unai Emery’s men started in the front foot and were rewarded with two …. as Boulaye Dia’s and Francis Coquelin’s strike stunned Liverpool to level the scores on aggregate.

Jurgen Klopp’s men responded with two quick goal in a space of five minutes in the second half. Fabinho and Luis Diaz drew Liverpool level at 2-2.

Geronimo Rulli, Villarreal’s goalkeeper, rushed out in the 74th minute to try intercept a through pass from Naby Keita, but was beaten to the ball by Mane, who danced around him and Juan Foyth before shooting into an empty net to put Liverpool 3-2 ahead.

The 30-year-old striker has now scored 15 goals in the Knockout stages, surpassing Didier Drogba’s 14.

Mane has also qualified for four finals in 2022. The African Cup of Nations (AFCON), English League Cup, FA Cup and now the Champions League final.

“I want to win everything with Liverpool. I am a fighter. I want to go for everything. I want the Premier League. I want the Champions League. I want the FA Cup. The rest hopefully will come naturally.” Mane told BBC.
