The one-cap Super Eagles forward needs to figure out his future as soon as possible and he’s been advised to remain at the Rotterdam based club.
Cyriel Dessers’ goals have aided Feyenoord tremendously this season, particularly in Europe.
The Nigerian has scored 10 goals in the Europa Conference League this season, the most of any player in the competition, and already has a song dedicated to him by the club’s supporters.
He’s now compared to former Feyenoord attackers Pelle and Pierre Van Hooijdonk, who both scored a lot of goals for Rotterdam and the Oranje.
Sjoerd Mossou, Dutch columnist wrote on Dessers; “A player who can effortlessly be added to the Kindvall-Van Hooijdonk-Pellè list. It now seems inconceivable that Dessers will walk out after this season, especially because his transfer fee of 4 million euros is relatively low for a striker. The return of the last few months gives the appearance of an outright bargain: his goals probably already brought in significantly more than his asking price.”
Fans have started a crowdfunding campaign to help Feyenoord pay Genk’s €4 million asking price, but FIFA rules prohibit it.
However, the club has gone out to the business community to assist pay the transfer, and some corporate leaders have expressed interest in supporting it.
Dessers is quickly becoming a fan favorite at the club, and despite his early troubles, he has made an impression at De Kuip.
This season, he has 16 goals in 36 appearances, with six of them coming in the league.
Arne Slot, Feyenoord’s coach, stated that the attacker has improved and is now considered as essential as the team’s main striker Bryan Linsen.
“Cyriel has simply developed very well. Especially in terms of fitness, I think. The work that is required of a striker, including in pressure, was Bryan preferred for a long time. But Cyriel is now also part of that. has grown enormously. Everyone has now been able to see with their own eyes that he can also be very decisive for us,” Slot said.
