Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has confirmed that both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will not travel with the team to Southampton following both players injury in the FA cup final against Chelsea.
However, he confirmed that the duo will be fit for the Champions League final against Real Madrid subject to no further injuries.
Liverpool’s leading goal scorer, Mo Salah suffered a groin injury in Saturday’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea while Virgil Van Dijk was subbed off due to a knee problem, inciting worries that Liverpool could be without two of their most important players for the last stages of their quadruple hunt. The duo will miss the Southampton game, a fixture that could put them 1 point behind league leaders Manchester City ahead of the final game week.
“No. Virgil definitely not but that was pretty much clear before the [Chelsea] game already that I thought, ‘OK, this is the game now,” Klopp told Liverpool’s official website.
“He played really a lot and then Saturday-Tuesday again. It was clear. They are both OK. So, the target would be for both that they can be involved again on the weekend.”
“Properly involved, bench or whatever and a few minutes or start, I don’t know, we will see that, because that would then be perfect for the game [Champions League final].”
“But if not then we take each day afterwards. But we are very positive, or [have] no doubt about the final. I’m pretty realistic about the Wolves game, but tomorrow rather not.”
Klopp also reiterated that, given Liverpool’s financial situation, they are unable to go after Kylian Mbappé this summer.
“Of course we are interested in Kylian Mbappé; we are not blind,” he said. “I have nothing to say about that [a reported approach] but between Kylian and Liverpool it’s all set, it’s all fine. We of course like him and if you don’t like him then you have to question yourself but, no, we are not, we cannot, be part of these battles. There must be other clubs involved and that is fine. He is a great player.”
