Former Aston Villa and England player, Gabriel Agbonlahor has praised Nigeria defender, Calvin Bassey and has urged his former side to sign the vibrant young defender.

Bassey who was named Man of the Match in Scottish cup final win against Hearts and heavily praised in their Europa league final loss to Eintracht Frankfurt is being appreciated by the Birmingham side and seen as an option in defence.

The Super Eagles defender, 22, plays in Left back, Center back or Left wing back position and his versatility is pivotal to interest from many clubs.

Agbonlahor believes that Steven Gerrard should reunite with his former defender in Aston Villa. The 35-year-old believes Aston Villa has enough financial resources to lure the Nigerian.

“The problem with Rangers and Celtic is they can’t pay the money that teams in the Premier League can. Goldson’s trying to move for financial reasons,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.

“What can Rangers offer Bassey? That’s the issue. He could probably get double the money at Aston Villa. I’m sure he would be reluctant to sign a new contract and see what is out there for him, to be honest.

“There will be clubs out there for him, 1000 per cent. He’s quick, calm on the ball, strong and good in the air. I’d take him at Aston Villa tomorrow. A lot of clubs in the Premier League will look at him.”

Agbonlahor expresses his “surprise” to Leicester letting such a talented defender leave the club. Rangers took advantage of cross-border rules to sign Bassey from Leicester for the nominal fee of just £300,000

” I’m surprised that Leicester let him go, to be honest. That’s very strange.”

Calvin Bassey has a contract until 2024 and reports from Ibrox suggests he could receive a “massive” pay hike.
