DJ Strawberry scored 20 points to lead Zamalek past Forces Armées et Police (FAP) in the third place game of the second edition of the Basketball Africa League at the BK Arena, Kigali.
Strawberry made 8-14 from the field, made five rebounds, five assists including four 3-pointers in 29 minutes for Zamalek.
Edga Sosa nd Mikhael McKinney both scored 17 points each. Mckinney came off the bench to score a double-double, 10 rebounds and 7/8 from the line while Sosa had 5-10 from behind the arc and shot 100% from the free throw line.
Zamalak dominated from start to finish as Forces Armées et Police had to do the chase for the entire game.
Sosa shot a buzzer beating 3 with 4 seconds left as the former champions took an 11 point (42-29) lead to the break.
Though the third quarter was a close game, the Egyptians stretched their lead to 20 points (60-40) after Sosa hit a three pointer with 3:44 minutes remaining to play.
Anas Mahmoud added 10 points and seven rebounds while Mohab Abdellatif contributed 11 points for Zamalek in 14 minutes.
Zamalek shot 14 of 32 from the deep and made 17/24 from the free throw line but suffered 19 turn overs against FAP.
The Cameroonian champions missed 13 of their free throws (23/36) which could have made a little difference for them.
Four players finished on double digit for FAP; Alex Wangmene (17), Charles Minlend (17), Joel Almeida (14) and Brice Bidias (10).
During the game, the Basketball Africa League announced some various awards. Petro de Luanda head coach Jose Neto was named the 2022 coach of the year.
Zamalek forward Anas Mahmoud was given the Minute 2022 BAL Sportsmanship Award while the Defensive Team of the second edition of the BAL was aslo named. Childe Dundao (Petro ), Jean Jacques (REG), Brice Bidias (FAP), Aboubakar Gakou (Petro) and Ater Majok (Monastir).
The Final of the 2022 Basketball Africa League between US Monastir and Petro de Luanda will take place on Saturday May 28 at the BK Arena, Kigali.
