Tunisian champions US Monastir beat Petro de Luanda 83-72 to clinch the second edition of the Basketball Africa League in Kigali on Saturday.
Monastir guard Michael Andre Dixon finished with a team high of 21 points, 6 assists while adding 6/7 from the line as he was voted the 2022 BAL Most Valuable Player.
Firas Lahyani was huge for Monastir when the team struggled scoring a double-double 21 points and 10 rebounds. Souleyman Diabate got off the bench to contribute four points and became the first player to win two BAL titles.
The Ivorian international had won the inaugural edition of the Basketball Africa League with Zamalek.
Ater Majok who ran into foul trouble in the third quarter was benched for a long time before he returned in the fourth quarter. Majok scored 14 points in 18 minutes for Monastir. He was named the 2022 Dikembe Mutombo BAL Defensive Player of the Year.
Only three Petro players finished in double digits; Gerson Goncalves led the way for Petro with a game-high ot 28 points, Moreira added 18 points and Morais contributed 12 points.
With three minutes remaining Monastir took advantage of the unsportsmanlike foul on Carlos Morais and extended their lead to 72-67. It got worse for Petro who had shown difficulty in the fourth quarter of their games in this campaign.
Monastir made an 11-5 run to claim the second edition of the Basketball Africa League.
The BAL also announced the All First Team : Edgar Sosa (Zamalek), Carlos Morais (Petro) , Terrel Stoglin (AS Sale) , Radhouane Slimane (US Monastir) and Ater James Majok (US Monastir).
