UEFA Technical Observer panel has selected the 2021/22 Champions League team of the season.
Liverpool duo Salah and Mane, Manchester City highest scoring player in the competition, Mahrez all missed out of this 11 players selection.
RealMadrid defeated Liverpool 1-0 on Saturday at the stade de France to lift the UCL trophy in a game marred by fans disorderliness before and after the game.
As expected, Liverpool and Real Madrid dominated the eleven having four players each and the remaining three players being from PSG, Manchester City and Chelsea.
However, runners up, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah were overlooked by the technical observer panel as the duo both missed out of the eleven. Sadio Mane scored 5 goals and made an assist in the competition while Mo Salah scored 8 goals and made 2 assists to help his team to the final.
Manchester City midfielder, Riyad Mahrez who was the fifth top scorer one position and one goal behind Mo Salah scored 7 goals and made 2 assists before his side lost out to the Los Blancos in the semi-final.
This means that no African was present in the UCL eleven.
Thibaut Courtois after an incredible 9 saves in the final was no doubt the pick for the goalkeeper of the tournament. The Belgian also had the most saves in the entirety of the tournament.
Andrew Robertson was named at left-back, with Chelsea defender- Ridiger partnered with Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defense. Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite his high-profile losing of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior for the only goal in the final, completes the back four.
The last Liverpool player in the eleven, Fabinho was inserted as the pivot 4 ahead of fellow Brazilian – Casemiro. His goal against Villarreal was important to the Kopites progress.
Croarian Maestro, Luka Modric whose famous assist to Rodrygo in the comeback win against Chelsea was vital for the UCL success was nominated in midfield.
Kevin DeBruyne goal against Athletico Madrid that secured their qualification to the semis and his first leg goal against Los Blancos earned him a spot alongside Modric in the midfield.
The competition 4th top scorer, Salah was decamped from his favourite right wing side position by French Striker, Mbappe. The PSG forward’s double against Real Madrid in the round of 16 was convincing enough to the panel to earn him the slot in the UCL eleven despite being knocked out of the competition early.
Vinicious Jr rightfully secured his position on the left hand side of the front three attack. His impressive display and goal in the final backed up by previous goals and trickery in the previous games helped him stamp his foot in the attack.
Benzema’s 15 goals across the competition this season guaranteed him a place in the side in his best Champions league campaign ever. The hat-tricks at vital moments against PSG and Chelsea, in particular, and his goals against Manchester City helped the Los Blancos climb their way to the UCL final.
Benzema who scored an incredible 11 goals out of his overall 15 in the knockout stages of this competition, deservedly won the UEFA Champions League Player of the Season.
The UCL final only goalscorer and 2nd top assist maker, Vinicious Jr., won the competition’s Young Player of the Season after an incredible season.
