Cape Verde made it back to back wins against Nigeria in the first round of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers following a 79-70 win in Kigali, Rwanda on Friday.
Walter Tavares and Joel Almeida both scored a double-double to lead their team past the D’Tigers.
Tavares scored 15 points, 13 rebounds while Almeida added 14 points and 13 rebounds with seven assists and three steals to go with it.
Patrick Lima contributed 10 points to complete the trio who scored in double figures for Cape Verde.
The D’Tigers held a one point lead in the opening quarter but were poor on shooting in the second quarter as they were outscored 11-25 by Cape Verde and trailed by 13 at half time (26-39).
They made a huge turn around in the third quarter when they played their best in the game. All that was short lived for Nigeria who gave away the mommentum built in the second half.
Tavares fouled out with 1:24 seconds left on the clock but D’Tigers did not do enough to use it to their advantage. Cape Verde led by the Almeida brothers Joel and Ivan made a 10-0 run (77-67) in the last 60 seconds of the game.
Michael Gbinije shot from the deep to reduce the deficit to seven but Cape Verde earned a foul which gave them a nine point victory over Nigeria and two straight wins in the first round of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
The win also kept Cape Verde’s hopes of reaching the second round of the qualifiers alive after recording just one win in the November window.
Four players finished on double figures for D’Tigers:Christian Mekowulu (13), Ikenna Ndugba (13), Uche Iroegbu (12), while Chimezie Metu added a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The D’Tigers will next play against Mali in their second Group A game on Saturday.
