Rangers’ FC defender, Calvin Bassey is ‘set’ to undergo a medical at Ajax as he prepares to become the Dutch champions most expensive defensive signing.
The Dutch champions are said to have agreed a fee of €22million with the Ibrox club and multiple reports claim that the Nigerian will complete the necessary pre-transfer tests shortly.
Bassey, 22, has been a dominant figure for Rangers’ since joining from Leicester City back in 2020, proving his mettle on the big stage by making 14 appearances in last season’s Europa League and performing heroically in the final defeat to Frankfurt.
He made 50 appearances across all competitions last season and was named in the Europa League team of the season following Rangers’ run to the final.
Ajax head coach, Alfred Schreuder identified the Italian born defender as his top target after losing Argentinian defender, Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United.
Bassey won Rangers’ young player of the season award for his displays last season.
Bassey’s departure will see Rangers pocket a club-record fee for a player that cost them a mere £230,000 from Leicester two years ago. Rangers sold academy graduate Nathan Patterson to Everton in a deal worth up to £16m in January.
