Germany women’s captain, Alexandra Popp made light of media outlets jokes that she should be called up for the men’s World Cup squad by appearing at a press conference wearing a moustache.

The 31-year-old forward has been in a fantastic form at the 2022 Euros, scoring six goals in five games — nearly half of Germany’s tally to top the goal scoring charts alongside England’s rival, Beth Mead.

Popp came off the bench to make her debut in the competition against Denmark and she’d marked it with her first goal. Since then, the Wolfsburg forward has scored five more times, becoming the first player ever to score in five successive Women’s Euro games.

A German satirical magazine and a football portal went on to suggest that Popp’s performances and goals during the Women’s Euro 2022 tournament were worthy of a call-up for the men’s World Cup squad in November.

FUMS magazine in one of their articles renamed her Alexander Papp and posted a photoshopped image of the striker sporting a mustache. The portal Der Postillon went with Alexander Bopp.

Popp casually walked in for her press conference wearing her cap backwards and nothing seemed amiss until she removed her mask, eliciting laughter when she revealed a moustache made of black tape as she said “Hello” with a deep voice.

“We were just kind of joking around at breakfast this morning and then said we’re just going to go for it,” the 31-year-old said. “I already think it fits with the mood in the team.” the three time Champions League winner concluded.

Germany play hosts England on Sunday for the trophy at the Wembley stadium. Germany are seeking a ninth Euros title while England are looking to win their first.
