Giorgian de Arrascaeta double was enough to propel Uruguay to the Round of 16 of the World Cup as they were held down by a Ghanaian side that only needed a draw to progress.

Andrew Ayew was presented with a perfect opportunity to enact revenge on Uruguay for 2010 World Cup but squandered the chance from the penalty spot when Mohammed Kudus was brought down.

Uruguay punished Ghana again for a penalty miss partly through Luis Suarez as his shot was parried by the goalkeeper towards the path of Arrascaeta to score the first.

The Uruguayan number 10 scored his second to double his side’s lead few minutes later with another Suarez assist as Arrascaeta volleyed the ball into the net.

At this point, Uruguay was second and will qualify from the group until South Korea completed a comeback win on Portugal to deny them the chance as they had more goals scored.

Uruguay tried to get the third goal that will make them qualify ahead of South Korea on goal difference but their penalty shouts and attempt could not lead to one.

Ghana and Uruguay got knocked out of the tournament.
