Argentina midfielder, Leandro Paredes has claimed that he would be happier for Lionel Messi than himself if his country manage to take home the FIFA World Cup trophy in Qatar this year.
With Messi confirming that tomorrow’s World Cup final will be his last ever match at the tournament, his teammates are looking to go all out on a bang and help him cement his legacy by lifting football’s most prestigious trophy.
Speaking to Radio La Red (Via Mundo Albiceleste) about his determination to win the World Cup for Messi.
Paredes said: “If we win the World Cup, I would be happier for Messi than I would be for myself. Hopefully it will not be Messi’s last World Cup. It’s difficult to go through four more years to play a World Cup. Let him play as a number five and I’ll move back, haha.”
Argentina and France are both looking to add a third title to their tally in the history of the tournament. Argentina won the coveted title in 1978 and 1986 while France achieved the honours in 1998 and 2018.
Speaking ahead of the game in Qatar, French coach, Didier Deschamps said : “We will do everything humanly possible for that not to happen. At the end of the match, someone is getting a 3rd star on their shirt.”
