Super Eagles forward, Taiwo Awoniyi was on the scoresheet as Nottingham Forest defeated Blackburn Rovers 4-1 to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
With the World Cup over, competitive top flight club football resumed and Black Burn Rovers hosted Nottingham Forest at the Edwood park for a chance to join the final 8.
Star striker Awoniyi led the line for The Tricky Trees The Garibaldi and was presented an opportunity early on in the game to make it 1-0 but his effort was well saved by the BlackBurn goalkeeper Pears.
Minutes later, Brennan Johnson was fouled in the box and he stepped up to slot the penalty to the left corner with the keeper diving the wrong way.
Two minutes before halftime, Rovers were presented an opportunity to draw the game level from a free kick and they took the chance well as Adam Wharton swung in the ball for Scott Wharton to head into the net.
Eight minutes into the second half, former Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard scored from a free kick as he worked a good connection with Neco Williams.
Awoniyi eventually found the net in the 79th minute, when he shrugged off a defender to receive a pass from Jesse Lingard, adjust his body and score a strikers’ finish.
In added on time, Nottingham Forest broke on the counter with Sam Surrige finding Brennan Johnson who struck the ball into the bottom corner to make it 4-1.
