After putting up a Man of the Match performance against Chelsea, Taiwo Awoniyi scored Nottingham Forest only goal against Joe Aribo’s Southampton in a 1-0 win at the St. Mary stadium on Wednesday.

Awoniyi’s goal was the decider as Nottingham Forest clinched an important away victory to move beyond the relegation zone.

It was a battle between two Nigerians Joe Aribo for Southampton and Taiwo Awoniyi for Nottingham Forest with both sides also battling relegation.

Che Adams tried to give the Saints the lead as early as the 6th minute but his effort could not find the target. Six minutes later, Awoniyi played a cut back pass toYates whose effort fell into the part of Johnson but the forward’s shot agonizingly hit the crossbar.

In the 27th minute, Awoniyi broke the deadlock after an awful mistake from Southampton. Awoniyi pressured Lyanco into slipping, making the ball fall kindly for Johnson. The Welshman drove the ball towards the goal before squaring the pass to Awoniyi who had all the time in the world to finish into an empty net and he didn’t miss.

Awoniyi’s fourth Premier League goal of the season made the difference in the match as there was no clear cut chance from either side again.

Southampton are now bottom of the table with 12 points while Nottingham Forest have climbed up to 15th with 17 points.
