Spalletti’s men had looked to have turned the game around after Charles Pickel early opener, set up by David Okereke was cancelled out by Juan Jesus and Giovanni Simeone to give the host the lead.
With three minutes of regular playtime left, Ghanaian forward, Felix Afena-Gyan rose high to head in an effort past Napoli’s goalkeeper, Alex Meret.
The match finished 2-2 after 90 minutes. With the score tied after 120 minutes the game went to penalties.
Cremonese scored all five of their penalties while Stanislav Lobotka missed Napoli’s fourth spot-kick.
Reacting after the game, Napoli’s coach, Luciano Spalletti said ; “There are matches you can’t go wrong. We weren’t good at handling the ball and finishing the game.
