Real Madrid defender and Austria national team captain, David Alaba has been subjected to racism by fans for voting Lionel Messi ahead of Karim Benzema in the Men’s Player category of The Best FIFA Awards.

Alaba who won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid last season after joining from Bayern Munich was attacked on social media by angry fans for his vote.

The Austrian captain took to social media to address why he voted Messi ahead of Benzema in the FIFA The Best Award.

“The Austrian national team vote for this award as a team, not me alone. Everyone in the team council is able to vote and that’s how it’s decided.

“Everyone knows, especially Karim, how much I admire him and his performances and I have often said that for me he is the best striker in the world, and that is still the case. Without doubt,” he added.

He has received a horrific amount of racist abuse since the award.

OJB SPORTS condemns any form of racism and tags it utterly disgraceful.
