On Wednesday, Nigeria’s hopes of participating in the Football event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games suffered a major setback.

This occurred at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, where Nigeria’s U-23 national team was held to a goalless draw by Guinea in the final rounds of qualifiers for the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Despite being champions in 2015 and never having missed an edition of the continental championship, Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.

The team is coached by Salisu Yusuf, who previously led the home-based Super Eagles side that did not qualify for the Africa Nations Championship.

The first half ended with neither team scoring, although Nigeria had several chances that were blocked by Guinea’s defense.

Guinea, on the other hand, was disciplined in possession but did not create many clear-cut scoring opportunities, except for a late effort that was saved by Nigerian goalkeeper Nathaniel Idowu.

Nigeria’s captain, Success Makanjuola, and Ifeanyi Ogba came closest to scoring, but both were denied by an equally excellent Guinea goalkeeper.
