On Monday evening, Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, defeated the Guinea-Bissau team 1-0 in a Group A match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign. The win has put Nigeria back in the lead position of the group table after the Eagles lost to the Djurtus in their previous fixture by the same margin.
Guinea-Bissau started the game strongly and nearly scored in the 6th minute when Mama Balde struck the ball from the edge of the box, but the Eagles were able to clear the ball. Nigeria’s Terem Moffi, Alex Iwobi, and Victor Osimhen had several chances to score, but none of them were able to find the target. However, in the 30th minute, Bright Osayi-Samuel was fouled in the box, which resulted in a penalty that Moses Simon converted to give Nigeria the lead.
Guinea-Bissau had a chance to equalize, but they failed to capitalize on their opportunities. In the second half, Nigeria made a substitution, bringing on Joe Aribo for Terem Moffi. Despite some tense moments, the Eagles were able to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.
With this win, Nigeria now has nine points in the Group A table, two more than Guinea-Bissau, while Sierra Leone is in third place with five points. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the 2023 AFCON tournament, which will be held in Ivory Coast.
