Nine-time African champions Nigeria continued their winning streak in the lead-up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup with a resounding 3-0 victory over New Zealand in a friendly match. The Super Falcons secured their third consecutive win in as many matches, intensifying their preparations for the tournament which is just 99 days away.
Despite early threats from New Zealand, Nigeria’s defense, led by captain Onome Ebi, remained solid and repelled the opposition’s attacks. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was also impressive, making crucial saves to keep her team in the game. Nigeria had their chances too, with Barcelona Femeni star Asisat Oshoala coming close to scoring from a free kick and a pinpoint cross by Michelle Alozie resulting in a goal by Jennifer Onyinye Echegini in the 49th minute.
The game was briefly halted for medical attention to a New Zealand player, but Nigeria continued to dominate. Veteran player Desire Oparanozie was brought in as a substitute and she sealed the victory with a close-range finish just before fulltime, making it 3-0 in favor of Nigeria.
With this impressive win, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are showing their form and readiness for the upcoming World Cup as they aim to make their mark on the international stage once again.
