Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen has expressed his ambition to win the coveted African Footballer of the Year award.
The award has not been won by a Nigerian player since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999, despite close attempts by Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Vincent Enyeama, and John Mikel Obi in subsequent years. Osimhen, who has been in sensational form for Italian Serie A club Napoli, is considered a top contender for the award.
With 21 goals in 23 league appearances and four goals in five UEFA Champions League outings, Osimhen has been a key player in Napoli’s pursuit of their first Scudetto in 33 years.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Osimhen revealed, “I am not going to lie. It would be my dream to be African Footballer of the Year. I was at the ceremony in 2015 when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won the award. As an African, you dream of this prize, and maybe I can win.”
