In a Saudi Pro League match on Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr suffered a 2-0 loss against their Riyadh rivals Al-Hilal. Al Nassr’s hopes of winning the title were dampened as former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo scored both goals from penalty kicks.
Ighalo won the first penalty for himself in the 40th minute after his impressive bicycle kick was blocked by an Al Nassr defender’s arm. He took the penalty calmly and sent the keeper the wrong way to give Al-Hilal the lead. In the second half, Al-Hilal was awarded another penalty after Michael was fouled by Masharipov, and Ighalo scored again by placing the ball in the same spot.
Although Ronaldo provided a moment of magic in the 76th minute with a brilliant goal, it was disallowed after a VAR review showed that he had been marginally offside. Ronaldo was denied by VAR intervention again when a free-kick he had fired into the Al-Hilal wall was found to have hit a defender’s back, not his arm.
Al Nassr lost significant ground in their pursuit of the title after Tuesday’s defeat, with Al-Ittihad leading by three points and having played one game fewer. Al Nassr has six league matches left to play, while Al-Ittihad has seven games remaining this season.
