In their second Group B match of the 2023 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, the Nigerian national U-17 football team, known as the Golden Eaglets, was defeated 1-0 by Morocco. The game started poorly for Nigeria as central defender Tochukwu Ogboji accidentally scored an own goal just two minutes into the match, putting them under intense pressure.
Although Nigeria tried to mount a comeback, their efforts were consistently thwarted by the disciplined Moroccan defense. Left back Emmanuel Michael’s cross to Abubakar Abdullahi in the 21st minute was blocked by the Atlas Cubs, while Daniel Favour was stopped by the Moroccan goalkeeper in the 25th minute. The Golden Eaglets captain Precious Williams also had a chance to score but was unable to penetrate the Moroccan defense.
Despite their best efforts in the second half, with Favour Daniel and Light Eke coming close to scoring in the 71st and 85th minutes respectively, the Golden Eaglets were unable to find the elusive equalizer. The team’s final group game will be against South Africa.
