Napoli, fresh off their title-winning campaign in the Italian Serie A, secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fiorentina at the Diego Maradona Stadium on Sunday evening. The match was a moment of personal history for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who broke the record for the top-scoring African player in Serie A history.

Osimhen made history when he scored in the 74th minute, surpassing the previous record held by George Weah, the legendary AC Milan striker. With 47 goals in the Serie A, Osimhen has now scored one more goal than Weah, who made 114 appearances for AC Milan over five seasons.

The Napoli number 9 sealed the game-winning goal from the penalty spot, blasting the ball past Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano. This was after he had missed an earlier penalty opportunity in the 48th minute when his teammate Stanislav Lobotka was brought down in the penalty area. The goal marked Osimhen’s second league goal against Fiorentina, after scoring his first goal against them last season.

Although Osimhen was substituted in the 77th minute, his contributions to Napoli’s title-winning campaign cannot be overstated. With 23 goals in the Serie A this season, he currently leads the league’s scoring chart, four goals ahead of his closest rival, Lautaro Martinez.
